Summary:Figurative painter José Balmes (b. Montesquiu (Barcelona), Spain 1927, emigrated to Chile in 1939), at present director of the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende presents at 83 years of age an editorial project dedicated to his life, art and contributions to the cultural life of Chile. Balmes arrived in Chile in 1939 in the ship Winnipeg as an exiled of the Spanish Civil War, ever since he has been an activist in favor of democracy a condition present in his paper artwork. In 1950 he was an active participant of the Grupo de Estudiantes Plásticos, and later was the director of the School of Fine Arts of the Universidad de Chile until 1973, who has won many prizes in Chile and aboard: Painting Prize of the Biennale de Paris (1961), the 1st Prize of the Bienal Iberoamericana de Buenos Aires (1986) and the National Prize of Art (Chile, 1999). Coauthor painter Francisco González-Vera comments "Juan Balmes since his arrival in 1939 has constructed the ethic notion associated to the traveling companion, to the duty of being alert and critic of the historic moment that he is living. To be in the thoughts of others and the identity of a citizen artist in the beginning of the 21st century"--P. 76.
