Summary:	The gifted doctor Kukot͡skiĭ marries Elena. The series follows their family history from the 1940s to the 1980s. Kukot͡skiĭ's career suffers because he supports the legalization of abortion, and he turns to drink. His friend is arrested. Elena slowly loses her mind to Alzheimers. Her daughter Tani͡a lives a Bohemian life, falls in love with twin brothers, marries one, but goes off to live with a jazz musician, and eventually dies in a maternity clinic. What is the cause of their misfortunes?
