Similar in format and scope to other volumes in this series (especially Samoa and Tonga), this selected annotated bibliography will appeal to many who found the others useful. Micronesia, which includes the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, the Northern Marianas, and Palau, encompasses a vast area, has a relatively small, scattered population and a complex history. The compilers organize 739 annotated citations into 23 topical sections, archaeology to nuclear testing to religion. General works about particular places are organized geographically in the first section, "The Islands and Their People," and the subject index brings together references about individual islands or island groups. Most entries cite monographs or government publications, but some articles are included from both scholarly journals and magazines such as National Geographic. The maps are sketchy and not very helpful in locating islands within the region. The biggest problem is the separate unannotated, unindexed list of hundreds of dissertations, a section more than half as large as the rest of the book, but not integrated with it. Comparison with John Thawley's Australasia and South Pacific Islands Bibliography (CH, Nov'97) reveals important works not cited here. For all collections where interest warrants. J. C.
