A number of new books have recently appeared in the analytical chemistry field because of chemists' increased use of automated methods. Clarity and compact form highlight this book. Both authors are well known; Dean is the editor of Lange's Handbook of Chemistry (11th ed., 1973; CH, Apr'74). The stated objective of this new work is to be a student introduction as well as a laboratory bench manual. It covers a breadth of topics with an empahsis on computerized methods. Each chapter is laid out with subtopics clearly labeled and good documentation located at the end. The illustrations are clear and often used. The index is complete. Only two small problems hinder the book from being an excellent introduction: the small amount of space devoted to the safety and the organization of a research project. Shugar and Dean's handbook may be compared to the established book by D.A. Skoog, D.M. West, and F.J. Holler, Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (5th ed., 1988). Smaller collections that have just purchased Fundamentals... can probably forego this handbook, but it is a good supplement to larger collections. -N. J. Bird, Harvard University
