Containing more than 1,700 entries for works written in English between 1954 and 1988, this is a solid contribution to the bibliography of Vietnam War literature. The focus is broad, including not only the US military involvement but also the French period, the antiwar movement, refugee problems, and postwar veterans' issues as presented not only in the creative, or "fictional" genres, but in nonfiction narratives, literary criticism, teaching materials, and even dissertations. It is arranged alphabetically by author within these areas, and offers both author and title indexes. Coming close on the heels of John Newman's Vietnam War Literature (2nd ed., CH, Jan'89), Wittman's work is more comprehensive in scope, but Newman's chronologically listed annotations, richer in plot details and critique, offer a superior "reader's advisory" service to the fictional treatment of the war. Wittman, however, corners the market in the very important narrative/biography area (e.g., Philip Caputo's A Rumor of War, 1977, is in Wittman, not Newman). No Library of Congress record numbers or ISBNs in entries, and there are typographical and other errors, but these will be minor irritants for most users. This work deserves praise for offering a most useful, concisely written compilation that is, in its diversity and coverage, not available in any other single reference tool. Recommended for all undergraduate collections. -C. L. Sugnet, University of Arizona
