For some time there has been a need for a comprehensive book on this subject. This timely (perhaps overdue) British import covers both the essential theory of all aspects of audio reproduction and a good deal of its practice. Written for the technician and layperson alike, the volume contains many illustrations, diagrams, charts, and tables, but little mathematics. Its contents summarized by chapter heads are. Why digital?; Conversion, Digital Audio Coding and Processing; Advanced Digital Audio Processing; Digital Audio Interconnects; Digital Recording and Channel Coding; Error Correction; Rotary Head Recorders; Stationary Head Recorders; Digital Audio in 8 mm Video; Digital Audio in Professional VTR; Disk Drives in Digital Audio; and the Compact Disc. Each chapter concludes with extensive references to significant pertinent international periodical literature for the engineer and technician desiring further information. An index to specific section heads of the work is also included. Highly recommended as an acquisition for libraries serving either technical groups or the public who require an authoritative overview of digital audio reproduction. -I. L. Kosow, emeritus, City University of New York
