The South Asia Language and Area Center (SALAC) is an administrative body of the University of Chicago created in the early 1960s, made possible through grants from the Ford Foundation and from the NDEA. Later it was designated as a South Asia National Resource Center (NRC), and is supported by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI of the Higher Education act of 1965. The Center continues to support the study of South Asia as it teaches several South Asian Languages (Bangala, Hindi/Urdu, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu), as it engages in community outreach, as it carries out the acquisition of printed and media materials for the instruction and research on South Asia, as it engages in national, regional and local outreach and consultation, and as it maintains relations with overseas institutions of higher education and other organizations that contribute to its mission. The Center's activities also include a significant component of public education about South Asia facilitated through the South Asia Educational Outreach Project. While the existence of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies (COSAS) predated the funding that enabled the creation of SALAC, the two of work cooperatively and interdepartmentally in order to enhance opportunities available to scholars both in the United States and in South and Southern Asia and to foster intellectual and scholarly communication and inter-disciplinary collaboration among the students and faculty at the University of Chicago and the wider Chicago and Southern Asian Studies communities. SALAC and COSAS cosponsor together a variety of activities including colloquia, workshops, conferences, public lectures, film series, cultural events, and other programs that promote understanding of the cultures and societies of South and Southeast Asia.
Summary:Consists of four technical reports on the Center.
