Summary:Chronicle of three Southern Italian youths who, after seeing the fierce Bourbon repression of the uprisings in 1828, swear to devote their lives to the cause of freedom and independence and become affiliated with Giuseppe Mazzini and his La Giovine Italia (Young Italy) movement. They reach Paris, where they come to know the charming Princess Cristina of Belgiojoso, a fervent patriot but also a champion of the rights of women and education for the people. They finally participate in an attempt to assassinate King Carlo Alberto of Savoy and the riots of 1834. The failure of both missions marks a deep crisis in three young patriots, exacerbating class differences between Angelo and Dominic, members of the noble class, and Salvatore, the son of more humble lineage.
