Books that attempt to describe (and teach) the graphic design process inevitably face a "Catch 22" situation: to make the subject understandable, it is overanalyzed to the point of making the information unusable. Type & Image suffers the same fate. By hoping to communicate the essence of graphic design, Meggs has so dissected the topic that the parts do not make up a meaningful whole. To his credit, Meggs faced a formidable task in gathering examples of American graphic design to illustrate the substantial number of topics he discusses. Unfortunately, all these examples are meticuously described in the text, making it ponderous to read the book. It is unclear who is the intended audience. The novice reader will undoubtedly be dissuaded by the complexity of the subject and the author's frequent references to design history and Gestalt psychology. Professionals will find that much of the text tends to be a rehash of information appearing in countless earlier graphic design publications. The ample number of illustrations of printed graphic design work are reproduced as well as can be expected. The most interesting (and helpful) images are the designers' roughs printed toward the end; these sketches for design solutions give a better understanding of the subject than much of what precedes in the text. -J.
