Summary: | Justice Ginsburg stands atop a miniature Volume 518 of U.S. Reports, where her landmark decision in United States v. Virginia striking down the all-male admissions policy at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was published. At her feet is a small model of the parade grounds at VMI. Under her left arm Ginsburg holds a copy of Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language, dating to 1785, from which she quoted in the 2003 copyright case Eldred v. Ashcroft. Her right hand holds a plug she is pulling from a safe, symbolizing Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for which she wrote a famous dissent in the 2007 Title VII equal pay case that led Congress to pass a corrective statute in 2009. The safe bears the image of a lily in honor of Lilly Ledbetter, the plaintiff, and inside the safe is 13 cents, representing the difference between every dollar paid to Ledbetter's lowest-paid male colleague and the 87 cents Ledbetter herself was paid. The safe will be completed by a tread from a Goodyear tire, symbolizing the plant where Ledbetter worked. The box in which the bobblehead will ship is lined with a photo of several volumes of the classic Federal Practice and Procedure by Wright and Miller. Justice Ginsburg is known as a procedure person. -- Ross Davies, editor-in-chief of the Green Bag.
