An insightful and original work in the entire spectrum of contemporary scholarly publishing. Broader than P.J. Curwen's The UK Publishing Industry (1981) and M.J. O'Connor's Editing Scientific Books and Journals (1978), Journal Publishing treats scholarly publishing internationally-with a decided emphasis on US and UK publishing experience. Page (director, Pageant Publishing), Campbell (director, Blackwell Scientific Publishing), and Meadows (head of library and information studies, Loughborough University) correctly cover all aspects of journal publishing, with a decided emphasis on the questions that might occur to readers who are new to this business. Chapters treat editing, production, marketing, subscription fulfilment and distribution, nonsubscription revenue, and very detailed assessments of the legal, financial, and bibliographic aspects of journal publishing. In preparing this easy-to-read book, the authors have included very timely chapters on helping the ailing journal and on alternatives to the traditional journal. There is extensive use of clearly presented tables and figures. The appendixes include a list of editorial associations, mailing-list sources, subscription agents, and consolidators. An essential tool for graduate students and faculty who are launching-or are part of-a new journal, and a useful resource for large public library collections.-R. Epp, Choice
