In the scientific literature, the effect of temperature on biological processes has possibly received more attention than on any other subject. Cossins and Bowler, both well-known researchers in thermobiology, have succeeded in providing an excellent introduction and critical synthesis of our current understanding in this area. Special emphasis is given to adaptations of animals for life in environmental extremes of heat and cold. The authors also examine holistically the effects of temperature from the molecular to the organismal level, and they review the role of temperature in reproduction, development, gene expression, and aging. The clear, readable text is accompanied by figures and illustrations that are particularly well done; the literature citations are up to date with many references from 1986. Strongly recommended for libraries serving upper-division undergraduates and graduate students.-R.E. Lee Jr., Miami University, Ohio
