This edited collection includes 39 chapters written by leading specialists from Australia, the UK, the US, Canada, Germany, and Sweden. The divisions of the book include key components of Russia's political background since 1991, important political institutions such as the presidency, significant issues of political economy such as business-government relations, turbulent societal currents such as nationalism and public opinion, and a range of foreign policy agenda items. Common themes that cut across many of the chapters include the increasing centralization under President Putin, the relatively slow growth of social instruments such as a critical mass media and vibrant public opinion, limits on regional and local government, power concentrations that include both economic and political elites, and the redesign of foreign policy strategies to put more emphasis on Asia and less on the West. The Handbook is an excellent tool for taking stock of where the Russian political system stands at the threshold of the new Putin presidency. The book supplements traditional single-authored works on Russian politics such as Stephen White's Understanding Russian Politics (1999). Contributors to the Handbook have the luxury of space to expand on essential topics in ways that broaden readers' understandings and perspectives. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduate students and above. J. W. Peterson Valdosta State University
