Introducing liberation theology /

The brothers Leonardo and Clodovis Boff, two of Latin America's outstanding Catholic theologians of liberation, have written a concise historical and thematic account of liberation theology that is also a definitive introduction. Published first in Brazil in 1986 as Como fazer Teologica de Liberatacao, this work demonstrates a mature approach to theological issues that in the context of concerns for human liberation can be very polemical and necessarily impassioned. Beginning with the basic question of how to be Christian in a world of destitution, the Boffs identify three levels at which liberation theology is done: the professional, the pastoral, and the popular. A very clear statement of theological method is made along with the examination of key themes in liberation theology. In addition, a brief history of this theological development is offered as well as an analysis of the impact of liberation theology both inside and outside of Latin America. The most important contribution of this book may be the Boffs' ability to write descriptively about liberation theology while not losing the passion and liveliness for which this type of theology is so well known. In responding to critics, the Boffs are careful to point out that rather than introducing a new theological method, what liberationists are doing is demonstrating in thought and action ``a new way of being a theologian.''
