A comprehensive guide to the immigrant, ethnic, and racial groups in the US. Its 13 chapters treat European, Asian, South American, and African immigrants, and native North Americans. Each chapter contains copious historical information, statistics, and vivid color maps depicting settlement patterns. The appendix lists the ancestries of state populations and ethnic populations for states and counties. There are indexes of places and ethnic populations. Special maps indicate interstate migration patterns. Although the statistical material is available in the 1980 census, the combination of large, high-quality maps and clearly written text make this a better source of information. It is also more useful than the Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups, ed. by Stephan Thernstrom (CH, Jan '81), because it is more up to date and has more detailed statistical data. Useful for historians, sociologists, and students of public administration; recommended for graduate and undergraduate libraries and appropriate special collections.-M. Margolis, Herbert H. More than 100 full-color maps show the distribution of various ethnic and racial groups in the U.S., and lengthy commentary explains each map. Combining the best elements of human geography with sophisticated computer techniques, this is an outstanding reference work in every respect and richly deserves the Dartmouth Medal it won in 1989.
