| Summary: | A major portion of India is still under the shadow of ignorance about HIV and the need to end discrimination against those who are infected, as well as the need to develop mechanisms for care and support of the infected/affected. The general status of women continues to be low in India, while the hatred and rejection that face women who are HIV positive is widespread. Gender differentials exist, both at the policy and program levels. Access to India's health care institutions is poor and there is hardly any counseling for infected women. There is a need of trained social workers, both in the urban and rural areas, to meet the counseling requirements of individuals who are infected, as well as affected family members. This book highlights these issues and the need to develop an all-inclusive set of policies and plans of action. |
