This book is an encyclopedia of field volcanology; there is no comparable book. The only work that overlaps somewhat is R.V. Fisher and H.U. Schmincke's Pyroclastic Rocks (CH, Oct '84). The entire approach used in this work is new and innovative. Both modern and ancient volcanic rocks are studied. A sedimentological approach using facies concepts facilitates understanding of volcanic depositional environments and petrologic relationships especially useful to the field geologist. This well-organized volume begins with magmas-facies and properties-followed by discussion of volcanic products, modern volcanoes and volcanic centers, facies models of ancient successions, and volcanism and tectonism. Extensive appendixes and bibliography are especially valuable. Numerous photos of volcanic rocks from the outcrop are generally excellent, and other illustrations are notably superior. The two authors are superbly experienced and knowledgeable in the field of volcanology. This book will, of course, be of great interest to volcanologists, but also will interest a remarkably wide range of geological specialists. Highly recommended for college and university geology collections.-T.L.T. Grose, Colorado School of Mines
