Integrated pest management (IPM) began a half century ago with the goals of reducing pesticides used in pest management through a better understanding of the biology of the host-pest interactions. Advances in the development of host-resistant plants, biocontrols, and the integration of many different control tactics are doing much to assist in reaching these goals. This 40-chapter book does an excellent job in reviewing the advances made in IPM, but more importantly in providing additional information that is needed to better the process. Revision and improvement in IPM tactics and strategies remain a continuing challenge. Pest resistance, including weeds with resistance as well as pests overcoming host resistance for both arthropods and pathogens, demands adherence to unique IPM strategies. All of this will require more site-specific analysis. The editors have selected an outstanding cadre to analyze overall concepts and unique case studies in adapting IPM. Wherever pest management is needed, IPM is needed--particularly when serious hazards could occur with the use of pesticides. Keeping growers in both developing and developed countries aware of the consequences of poor pesticide management must be continued. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
