A valuable addition to the growing list of reference works on the Yiddish language. Although its title suggests more than a dictionary, the book contains primarily a brief grammatical explanation and a bilingual dictionary (Yiddish-English and English-Yiddish), in which some 8,500 words and phrases are glossed. Other noteworthy features include an excellent scholarly introduction, a pronunciation guide for each word, the original Hebrew word, and an appendix of popular expressions and proverbs. The inclusion of usage examples within the cultural heritage would have been an added enhancement but this seems to lie outside the authors' purpose. Both the format and layout are well planned and easy to read, and there are chapter headings on each page to assist the reader. This dictionary should be useful to any library where there is interest in this language or culture. Recommended for all colleges and universities.-W.D. Menefee, The Ohio State University
