In this outstanding collection of essays, Williamson (economics of law and organization, Yale) develops and applies his concepts of transactions economics. Other essays in the volume analyze business structure and problems of managerial control. The author's recognition of historical antecedents from John R. Commons's The Economics of Collective Action (1950) and Alfred Dupont Chandler's Strategy and Structure (1962), and extensive citations of authoritative related works are especially valuable. Essays applying theories to analyze current antitrust problems emphasize the importance of Williamson's work. Williamson is a widely acclaimed authority on economic organization, its private operation and public control. The essays are clearly written and contain little sterile model building. Extensive references to preeminent related works are appended to each essay. This work brings together in one volume Williamson's contributions scattered in journal literature. Attractive format; superior index. A must for libraries serious about contemporary economic organization. Upper-division and graduate students.-R.O. Werner, The Colorado College
