Brody (Northwestern Univ.) brings to this fascinating exploration of punctuation her diverse interests in African American studies, performance studies, experimental art, queer studies, theater, and literature. She analyzes the complex function of punctuation, in both text and art, as a system of symbols that do not necessarily create meaning but certainly shape the way one understands the written word. The author incorporates numerous textual and visual examples that delineate the performative nature of periods, hyphens, ellipses, and quotations marks, thus making her argument concrete. This unique book will serve as an interesting supplement to work in variety of areas, particularly those that take an interdisciplinary approach. Summing Up: Recommended.
