Command Under Sail is the first of a projected series showing the influence of certain naval officers upon US naval traditions of command. This is accomplished through a series of 12 individual biographies, from Esek Hopkins to Robert Stockton-each done by a different naval historian, many previously published. The advantage of this book is that it serves as a well-documented reference to the lives of our more important naval officers, a few of whom are not so easily recognized. There are excellent bibliographic essays and references at the end of each biography, and a few illustrations. One hopes that the projected plan to continue this bibliographic series through modern times may come to fruition. Public and academic libraries, all levels.-B.H.
