Roth's volume, with more than 1,000 annotated entries, continues the work begun with his 1973 bibliography, compiled with Joel Weinsheimer, of Austen studies published between 1952 and 1972. Covering the years from 1973 to 1983, with some 1984 items, it is an invaluable guide to all major books, essays, articles, dissertations, and significant critical material that has appeared in any form. The nonevaluative annotations state the major thesis of each work, often in the critic's own words. It is divided into three sections: books, essays, and articles; dissertations; and what Roth calls ``significant mentions,'' material offering especially perceptive or striking ideas, regardless of length. Each section is arranged chronologically, and, within each year, alphabetically by author or, for book reviews, journal title. The compiler also includes a list of reviews under each book entry and traces extended correspondence in journals and continuing critical disputes. Author, subject, and Austen title indexes complete its usefulness. Although the text is reproduced from typescript, it is clear and readable. Recommended only to university libraries, as a supplement to David Gilson's impeccable A Bibliography of Jane Austen (1982, CH, Jan '83), which covers criticism between 1813 and 1978, and to the earlier Roth-Weinsheimer volume. Smaller institutions can make do with such omnibus bibliographies as Richard J. Dunn's The English Novel: Twentieth Century Criticism (1976) and Helen H. Palmer and Anne Jane Dyson's English Novel Explication (CH, Dec '73) and its 1976 and 1981 supplements.-M.E. Devine, University of North Carolina at Asheville
