These three reports from the Committee on the Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System make up the "Future of Emergency Care" series. Hospital-Based Emergency Care covers issues such as overcrowding in emergency departments nationwide; increasing uncompensated emergency care; workforce shortages and limited availability of specialists, particularly in rural areas; and innovations in information technology to enhance efficiency and patient safety. Emergency Medical Services at the Crossroads focuses on the lack of coordination between EMS and other first responders; lack of research on quality of care and practices of EMS professionals; and workforce, infrastructure and disaster preparedness issues. Emergency Care for Children updates the 1993 Institute of Medicine report Emergency Medical Services for Children, ed. by J. S. Durch and K. N. Lohr. This volume addresses emergency departments' lack of adequate training and supplies for the unique needs of pediatric patients, and the need for more evidence on optimal use of medications and procedures in children.Improved coordination, regionalization, and accountability are emphasized throughout the "Future of Emergency Care" series. Each of the three books has an appendix summarizing all the recommendations posed in the series. The appendix presents recommendations in a table showing the groups responsible for implementing them (government agency, hospitals, private industry, etc.) Students and faculty working in health policy or health administration will find this series insightful. However, purchase is not necessary; all three books may be read online for free . PDF versions may also be purchased at this Web site. Summing Up: Optional.
