In an inspired bit of casting, rock star David Bowie stars as an alien who comes to Earth in search of water for his drought-stricken planet in Nicolas Roeg's fascinatingly offbeat sf cult classic. Once available in an inferior-looking, expurgated edition, the film was released by Anchor Bay last year in a digitally upgraded "complete and uncensored" version restoring 20 minutes of footage not included in the original domestic theatrical release. Libraries not owning that edition ought to opt for this still better one, which includes the Walter Tevis source novel. (c) Copyright 2010.
