Notes:Originally published in the Columbian centinel, June-July 1791, and at the time commonly ascribed to John Adams, vice-president of the United States, although the last letter states explicitly that he had nothing to do with the authorship or publication. The letters were in reality the work of his son, then a young lawyer in Boston. Cf. Works of John Adams, 1850-56, v. 1, p. 454 and v. 8, p. 507.
Only eight of the eleven letters are here reprinted.
