This research guide seeks to clarify and simplify the overload of research options that exist, and to provide a best practices approach to discovering, evaluating, and using the best information sources, Web or print, to obtain the most appropriate information for research needs. Stebbins provides a practical step-by-step introduction to the research process and the critical role that evaluation plays. Her opening chapter covers the "seven steps of research." The following six chapters focus on locating and assessing specific types of resources, including monographs, periodicals, primary sources, biographical resources, legal resources, and government documents. Stebbins concludes with a chapter covering the basics of research note taking and citations. In her treatment of the material, she provides numerous examples to help guide readers through the research process. Additionally, the book contains useful end-of-chapter reference resources, an appendix on specialized journal article databases and indexes, a glossary, title index, and subject index. Although this work is not a replacement for more specialized topical research guides, it is a highly functional, comprehensive, and straightforward research guide for today's students. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
