Initially conceived as a Canadian supplement to Encyclopedia of Social Work, ed. by R. L. Edwards et al. (CH, Nov'95, 33-1257), which has a decidedly American focus, this unique reference source evolved into a stand-alone work covering the social work profession from a Canadian perspective. The coverage of persons is especially strong. Other entries consider organizations, institutions, events, and concepts, all with reference to Canadian practice, institutions, laws, and government agencies. Over 200 social work professionals and scholars from all over Canada contributed to the more than 500 signed entries, which begin with a brief definition and conclude with a list of related entries and references. Regretfully, references are not extensive and items for further reading (one of the most useful parts of the Encyclopedia of Social Work) are not provided. Nevertheless, this is an indispensable book for social work practitioners and scholars in Canada; it will be useful for their colleagues throughout the English-speaking world. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
