The second in a projected set of three volumes being produced as part of Dictionary of Literary Biography, this work augments the rapidly expanding reference literature on writers of the Caribbean and Africa. Countries represented are Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, South Africa, and Jamaica. Of the 33 writers listed, all but two, Kenyan Grace Ogot and Nigerian Flora Nwapa, are male. Emphasis rests on authors whose principal work appeared during the present century, with white South African writers being deferred for a later volume. Entries open with lengthy bibliographies of all publications, recordings, and uncollected materials, followed by essays tracing the evolution of each individual's vision and distinctive contributions, highlighting major works. Photographs of each writer accompany the text. A listing of books for further reading and a cumulative index complete the volume. Readers unfamiliar with the cultural contexts of African and Caribbean regional schools of writing will find the introductory essay valuable. Necessary only for libraries holding previous volumes of this set. R. B. M. Ridinger; Northern Illinois University
