Reflecting the multiculturalism of the series in which it is published, this volume includes essays by writers from Canada, Australia, Poland, Austria, Spain, Holland, and Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean. Many of the 33 contributors will be unfamiliar to most; Amiri Baraka, Richard Ford, and Jayne Anne Phillips are exceptions. The essays take up not only obligatory subjects (e.g., the form and art of the short story) but also such topics as pedagogy, culture, politics, and gender. Though this volume offers valuable insights about the short story, its price cannot be ignored. Libraries will fare far better with either The Art of the Short Story, ed. by Dana Gioia and R. S. Gwynn (2005), or On Writing Short Stories, ed. by Tom Bailey (CH, May'00, 37-4930). ^BSumming Up: Not recommended. S. W. Whyte Montgomery County Community College
