These 12 essays originated at a 2001 seminar at Oxford University organized by Fox, the editor and the contributor of one essay and a long, very useful introduction. The collection might have been subtitled "Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Xenophon"--the topics are wide ranging and written by Greek historians with experience and expertise from archaic to Hellenistic to Byzantine, although the focus is always on Xenophon and the Anabasis. Topics range from literary analysis of the text to the role of mercenaries, slavery, religion, and Panhellenism. As usual with essay collections, these are uneven in quality and focus, although the range here is from good to excellent. Some are dense scholarly argument; others can easily be read by intelligent nonspecialists. The two maps and fourteen illustrations are well chosen and add much to the understanding, especially of topography. Many are photographs of actual sites Xenophon traversed. Almost all libraries should have this book. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All academic levels/libraries. J. J. Gabbert emerita, Wright State University
