Dichotomy is the word that comes to mind as one flips through Rheims's latest photography book. The award-winning French photographer presents 220 photographs of many of the world's most famous and easily recognizable women, often shown in ways that conflict with better-known images from the popular media. The portraits have a tableau quality, with the subjects seeming to spoof and yet embody their own media images at the same time. Madonna chews bubble gum and wears mouse ears, while Gwen Stefani appears as a Bollywood movie star. There is also a casual element to these photographs. Even when they are elaborately dressed or wearing lingerie, the women often appear to be looking straight into the camera as if a family member or loved one were snapping the picture. In Rheims's version of female sexuality, a high-glossed edge coexists with a certain offhandedness. This attractive collection is recommended for large public and academic libraries with strong photography collections.-Sheila Devaney, Univ. of Georgia Libs., Athens (c) Copyright 2010.
