In 1957, the International Statistical Institute developed a dictionary of statistical terms that has become a trusted and esteemed standard reference in the field. This sixth edition of that work, by a professor of statistics and operations research (Univ. of Neuchatel, Switzerland), is greatly improved over the fifth edition in content, format, size of print, and quality of print and paper. This edition includes 375 additional terms, for a total of 3,540 currently in use in the field. Some entries, especially for eponymous terms, lead either to seminal literature on which the term is based, or to selected recent literature that is particularly illustrative. Citations to this literature make up a useful 57-page bibliography of statistics. The volume also cites five major encyclopedic works related to statistics. Definitions are as long as needed to be complete, and contain detailed mathematical formulas when necessary. Cross-references to related entries further explain complicated terms, and formulas are easy to read and well placed. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and higher. A.
