Western films have been around for a century now, and this newest reference book about Westerns has some 3,500 entries for films in alphabetical order. Entries supply the production company, release date, running time, and brief cast and crew lists. The book's appeal lies in its plot summaries and evaluations (which not every entry has). Five appendixes list spaghetti Westerns (many released 1965-72), Westerns nominated for Academy Awards (arranged by year), film titles and the books that they were based on, and films from the sound and silent eras that did not merit full coverage. The book has more than 100 black-and-white illustrations, cross-references, and a selective bibliography. The late author also compiled White Hats and Silver Spurs: Interviews with 24 Stars of Film and Television Westerns of the Thirties through the Sixties (1996), which provided some details used in this work. Libraries that have Phil Hardy's heavily illustrated The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: The Western (1994), which lists some 1,700 films arranged by decade, will want to give serious consideration to Fagen's work. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
