The sixth edition of Esdaile's Manual contains changes made to this British classic by Roy Stokes before his death in 1995 and by Stephen R. Almagno, once one of Stokes's students and close friend. He, in turn, called on three of his own former students for their assistance in completing the revisions. This book describes the various elements of the book that form the basis for bibliographical studies: format, materials, letter design and typography, composition, illustration, and binding. Additionally, chapters are devoted to the nature of bibliography and descriptions of various aspects of the book as an artifact. This is not the standard bibliographical text used in schools of information or library science in the US, although it may well be in Great Britain. References in the text are generally to British and Continental imprints, not American. However, this is a very useful introduction to the book as an artifact, an essential skill for scholars interested in the new academic discipline of the history of the book. Useful for upper-division undergraduates through faculty. G. B. Barnhill American Antiquarian Society
