Farrington's attempts to find a common ground between the biblical record and modern archaeology sometimes fail--e.g., when she attributes the building of the First Temple to Solomon (p. 46), after admitting "there is no absolute proof" of the Temple's existence (p. 37). Various chapters deal with great Bible journeys, the rise and fall of Israel and Judah, and regions of the ancient Mediterranean. The book is beautifully illustrated, with excellent maps, but suffers from poor editing. Many problems are typographical errors, but some are not; for instance, why are tablets from Mari, in Syria, said to expand our knowledge of the much later Assyrian culture (p. 12)? Surely the author meant to write "Syrian." The index and glossary are minimal, and there are no notes or bibliography. Not recommended for research libraries. ^BSumming Up: Optional. General readers.
