Hamilton and Block (academic librarians, Ohio State Univ.) provide a comprehensive annotated bibliography that examines the portrayal of ethnic minorities in American feature films from the industry's inception in 1896 to the present. About 478 entries cite individual essays, scholarly treatises, chapters within larger works, reference works, and film reviews that render a historical view of ethnic imagery in American film. The works cited discuss major films that have contributed to the celluloid degradation of many ethnic groups (including Caucasian ethnic groups) and films resulting from the empowerment and control that minority groups took to reflect their ethnic images in American film more realistically. Though main ethnic groups predominate (African, Native, Hispanic and Asian Americans), studies of Africans, Arabs, British, and Canadians can be found as well. Indexes supply access points through film titles, names, subjects, and essay titles. A gold mine for graduate students and scholars seeking research on the regression and progression of ethnic imagery in American film. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students and faculty.
