This is not a typical research methods textbook. And cultural studies is not a typical social science. Instead of a cookbook of methods, Gray (cultural studies and sociology, Univ. of Birmingham, UK) offers students a thought-provoking exploration of the research process in cultural studies, the study of everyday culture as it is lived and experienced by real people. She begins by reviewing the history of research methods in cultural studies, tracing their development from qualitative methods and techniques practiced in other disciplines. She continues by exploring various approaches to gathering research materials, illustrating her discussion with detailed examples from the literature. Finally, Gray discusses several approaches to analysis, gives valuable practical advice on the writing process, and suggests a few criteria for evaluating research in cultural studies. Although the book is well written, Gray's style is sometimes difficult to follow, and many readers will find that some background in cultural studies is required to get the most out of the material. Nevertheless, this unique volume will be an important addition to any collection on research methods in the social sciences. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above.
