Aristotle and modern politics : the persistence of political philosophy /

Tessitore and his 12 coauthors address problems central to contemporary liberalism by turning to Aristotle's political teaching. The book is divided into four groups of three articles. Building on a renewed interest in the study of Aristotle and with constant reference to his political philosophy and to the challenges and critiques current in contemporary scholarship, the authors examine how an Aristotelian perspective might (1) resolve the tension between the requirements of political community and those of liberal individualism, (2) shed light on the discussion of whether virtue is necessary for sound political life, (3) provide a better frame of reference for examining current debates about legal and economic theory and practice, and (4) indicate the importance of linking political desires with a broader view of human nature. The articles are thoroughly researched, well grounded in the contemporary literature as well as in Aristotle, and highly readable. Moreover, the authors show a rare ability to bring out the best in those whom they study, whether to blame or to praise.
