Of the 208 numbers all were by Johnson except no. 10, by Hester Mulso, afterward Mrs. Chapone; no. 30, by Catherine Talbot; no. 97, by Richardson; no. 44 and 100, by Elizabeth Carter. Parts of no. 15 and 107 are by unknown correspondents. cf. Courtney, Bibl. of Johnson, etc. "The Idler" included essays which first appeared weekly in the Universal chronicle, April 15, 1758 to April 5, 1760, by Samuel Johnson, with the exception of 12 papers contributed by Thomas Warton, Bennet Langton, and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
