As suggested by the title, this book is a best-practice guide to assessment of retail impact. Content for the book was adapted from the author's doctoral dissertation, and the format and rigid writing style reflect this origin. Overwhelming coverage deals with Britain, although the author devotes token coverage to retail location policies in the rest of Europe and in the US and Canada. The terminology is also British. The major focus is how to deal with government policies regarding retail location, and many references are made to British public policy guidelines. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches to retail impact assessment are discussed, and three types of impact are considered: economic, social, and environmental. Glossary of terms. Most appropriate for comprehensive business collections, research and professional. W. H. Brannen Creighton University
