Hermann Eduard Von Holst was a German national who taught at the Universities of Freiburg and Strasbourg prior to his immigration to the United States in 1892. He became chairman of the History Department at the University of Chicago, a position he held until ill health mandated his retirement in 1900. Von Holst's master work, The Constitutional and Political History of the United States (1876), examined the development and operation of American democracy from a critical stance.
Summary:Consists of personal and professional correspondence, manuscripts, financial records, a diary, reprints, clippings, and photographs. Also includes a letterbook which documents not only the activities of the German Patriotic Aid Society (1870-1871), but also Von Holst's friendship with Friedrich Kapp. Correspondents include Carl Schurz, William Rainey Harper, Albert Bushnell Hart, J. Laurence Laughlin, Frederick T. Gates, Thomas W. Goodspeed, Carl Schurz, Benjamin Terry, Henry Villard, James Westfall Thompson, and Woodrow Wilson.
