What the title of this interesting examination of gender in teacher education omits is that the research is based on teacher training in Argentina. The author examined the attitudes and thoughts of prospective teachers through the use of questionnaires, interviews and observations, and analysis of his subjects' drawings. The study's strengths include a most interesting history of Argentinean teacher education, a discussion of the status of teachers there today, and thorough research. His analysis of the drawings elicited from his subjects adds a bit of novelty not often found in studies of prospective teachers. Although both the US and Argentina have well-established gender stereotypes and biases, the strong Marianismo of the latter's society--the strong association of women with virtue and motherhood--makes it less probable that the research findings would hold to the same degree in this country. The organization of the book is detailed but not reader-friendly, probably as a resu lt of the book's genesis in a dissertation that won the 1998 Gail P. Kelly prize from the Comparative and International Education Society. Recommended for graduate students and professionals. E. L. Ihle James Madison University
