A young father is given the 'wrong blood' after a train accident, and dies in hospital.A young woman, Mel Holloway, is left unfulfilled by her tough job in a trade union, and her relationship with her ailing boyfriend, her only escape nights out with her irepressible Spanish friend, Pepa. Struggling to inject meaning into her life, Mel throws herself into a case against a major drugs company, whose malpractice, she believes, led to the man's death. To her surprise she finds herself forming a deep attachment to the man's wife, which develops into love. But she is equally unprepared for the betrayals of those she had counted as friends as the company uses its influence to thwart her.
