Deloach is well known for his identification manuals, which feature excellent underwater photographs of tropical marine life. Although this book is well written and authoritative, it is still primarily a photographic treatise (photographs by Paul Humann), with emphasis on behavior of the fishes. It is a remarkable work because it illustrates aspects of fish behavior that are uncommon and difficult to photograph. As a whole, it comprises a unique collection that compares behavior patterns in many different species. Included are examples of feeding, reproduction, camouflage, symbiosis, and other actions. It will be a useful book for anyone interested in reef fishes and the ways in which they have adapted to their environment. Recommended for undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. J. C. Briggs; University of Georgia
