Knight divides the topic of glaciers into chapters that treat specific issues. Following an introduction, the chapter "Glaciers in the Global System" examines the relationship between glaciers, climate, oceans, and other linkages. Further chapters discuss formation and mass balance of glaciers and ice sheets; material, chemical, and thermal properties of glaciers; aspects of glacier hydrology, movement, and morphology; issues of glacier fluctuations. The chapter "Glacial Sediment Transfer and Geomorphology" ties the text to glacial geology. Glacier hazards and resources are next considered, and one chapter offers a discussion of research directions in the field. The importance of ice core research in the earth sciences is also stressed. An excellent book for senior undergraduates studying glaciology and glacial geology, but it is suitable also as an introduction for anyone with an interest in glaciers. Extensive reference list (30 pages); relatively short, five-page index. Upper-division undergraduates and up. J. T. Andrews; University of Colorado at Boulder
