Posthofen (Utah State Univ.) has assembled 18 excellent contributions on Frischmuth's fiction, essays, lectures, and plays for this first English-language volume on the works of contemporary Austrian author Barbara Frischmuth. Using comparative and intertextual approaches, these essays attempt to place the author in a global perspective. They cover a wide gamut: aesthetics, multiculturalism, political issues, linguistic usage, racial concerns, and ecology. Two interviews with the author are also included. All the essays are clearly written and well edited, and Posthofen has provided meticulous translations of all German references and quotations. Besides being of great use to the scholar of German literature, this book is essential for anyone interested in contemporary comparative literature or in world literature. It should be in every undergraduate and graduate library. R. Acker; University of Montana
