A cycle of keen-edged but ironically elegiac stories about Germany on the brink of the Nazi abyss, focusing on a series of colorful characters no one would readily call heroes. While Hegi's novel captures the prewar atmosphere in the isolated German countryside, Isherwood paints the picture from the perspective of cosmopolitan, decadent Berlin.
