Based on research conducted 1989-91, this second edition of a work first published in 1979 is intended "as a basic reference aid for scholars interested in utilizing the diverse and often unique resources of the nation's capital for research in. . .Latin American studies." It focuses on resources in the social sciences and humanities, and defines Latin America broadly to include the Caribbean. The work is in two sections, collections (e.g., libraries, archives, museums, banks, and map, sound recording, and film collections) and organizations (research centers, information offices, university programs, US government agencies, international organizations, embassies, associations, organizations promoting cultural exchange and technical assistance, and publications and media). Appendixes include information on bookstores, housing, transportation, and other topics of interest to Washington visitors. There are helpful indexes of personal papers, library subject strengths, organizations and institutions, subjects, and artists mentioned in the guide (the latter new to this edition). This edition is arranged and categorized like the first (although it is 81 pages longer). The entries include basic directory information as well as description and evaluation and have been brought up to date. Recommended for all libraries with a serious interest in Latin America. A.
