Notes:	The University Settlement was established in 1894 under the auspices of the Christian Union of the University of Chicago with Mary McDowell as its first Director. The Settlement's purpose was to "promote neighborhood unity and the improvement of neighborhood and municipal conditions." In 1895 Mrs Frank L. Miller and other University women organized the wives of faculty into the University of Chicago Settlement League in order to generate interest in the Settlement's work and provide it with financial support. In 1957 the Settlement League became the University of Chicago Service League.
Summary:	Contains correspondence, annual reports, constitutions and by-laws, minutes, calendars of events, annoucements, brochures, financial records, programs of League benefits and special interest group activities, newsletters, yearbooks, histories of the League and the University of Chicago Settlement, photographs, and clippings. Correspondents include Lessing Rosenwald, Maude Phelps Hutchins, George Beadle, and others. Records document activities and programs carried out by the League such as fund-raising benefits to support the University Settlement, Camp Brueckner-Farr, and the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club; lectures by guest speakers; publications; and special interest groups.
